Mississippi State offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey underwent surgery Monday morning, but is expected back on the practice field when the Bulldogs begin game-week preparation for Louisiana Tech next Monday.
The team was told of the undisclosed routine during a regularly scheduled team meeting Monday morning. The McCorvey family has asked that the planned medical procedure remain confidential and private.
“Woody informed me last Thursday of his physician's recommendation to have this surgery done at this time,” MSU head football coach Sylvester Croom said Monday. “We expect Woody to make a full and complete recovery from surgery and be back in the office by next Monday. In the unexpected event that he is not able to return, we will adjust as needed and will move forward with the game plan we have intact.”
State will practice once each day this week before moving into season opening game preparations Aug. 25.

After Friday's practice, Coach Croom said that senior Derek Pegues have been suspended for the LA-Tech game. Sophomore, Karlin Brown, has also been suspended for the game.
Croom said the suspension was due to both players not adhering to the University’s academic attendance policy.
It is the policy of MSU and the SEC that if any player has at least four unexcused absences, they are then ineligible for one game. |

“We’re excited to get our fall practice started. I think our players have been really enthusiastic up to this point, as far as the work. I think it’s extremely obvious they worked hard over the course of summer and came back in relatively good shape. I want to comment Ben Pollard and his staff for what they did this summer, our kids have worked awful hard and a lot of them have totally changed their bodies. One that comes to mind is Aubrey Bell, he’s in the best shape in his life and practicing at a much, much higher level than he ever had. That’s just one of several guys who has really changed their bodies and the way they go about things. Brandon Hart is another guy who is in great shape and has a totally different attitude this year.

What a difference a day makes. After suffering and struggling through its first fall practice, the Mississippi State football team regrouped for a solid two-and-one-half hour workout on Monday evening.
“The score is even now,” head coach Sylvester Croom said. “It’s heat one, Bulldogs one. We went from one extreme to the other. Today was one of the best practices we’ve had – top to bottom – since we’ve been here.”
The head coach’s praise ranged from the first defensive unit, which he called “impressive in the way they moved to the football,” to junior running back Anthony Dixon, who had “his best-ever practice.”

| MSU computer science student uncovers major software flaw |

A Mississippi State graduate student working with the university's Critical Infrastructure Protection Center could be nicknamed "Johnny-on-the spot."
Robert W. "Wes" McGrew of Collinsville recently discovered what is being called "a significant software vulnerability" that could allow hackers the ability to gain entry to computer control systems of numerous industries and potentially threaten national security.
Center director Ray Vaughn said the computer science doctoral student found serious flaws in software commonly used in worldwide nuclear power and oil and gas industries.
"We know that this software exists in very critical infrastructures in the U.S.," said Vaughn. "Through his research, Wes demonstrated how it was possible to obtain unauthorized access to the control system in just a few seconds.
"He then discovered how to break every encoded password in the system and how to bypass password security altogether," Vaughn added.
The National Security Agency was notified immediately of McGrew's discovery. Shortly thereafter, the Department of Homeland Security broadcast an alert that included information on how to rectify the problem.

This year groups within both Academic and Student Affairs have come together to host the First Annual Service DAWGS (Donating A Wonderful Gift of Service) Project on Monday, August 11, 2008.
Service DAWGS provides an opportunity for MSU students to volunteer in the local community. We are asking faculty and staff to contribute their time on that day so we can make a lifelong impression on our incoming freshmen about the way MSU values community service.
Volunteers will be asked to work from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on campus or in our nearby communities. All participants will receive an official Service DAWGS T-shirt and free BBQ lunch to thank you for your service.
Volunteers will be asked to help our students by helping with registration of student volunteers, serving lunch, or chaperoning a team of students at a community site.
To volunteer, please complete the volunteer application at: http://www.msstate.edu/org/campusoutreach/
For further information, please contact Dr. April Heiselt, Service-Learning Coordinator, at 662-325-7919 or aheiselt@colled.msstate.edu. |
